Representatives of 61 towns, cities and villages from across the UK gathered at the London Guildhall last night (30 September 2003) for the results of the 2003 Britain in Bloom UK Finals, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the UK's leading gardening charity, in partnership with B&Q.

Monty Don, (gardening writer, broadcaster and organic gardener), presented four Gold, 14 Silver Gilt, 25 Silver and 17 Bronze Britain in Bloom Achievement Awards, in addition to 10 Discretionary Awards and the category winner announcements.

We are all proud of Drumnadrochit - Winners of Beautiful Scotland in Bloom Small Village Trophy in 1997 and 2002, and winners of the Scotsman Shield for Best Village in Scotland 2002. Winners of the Royal British Legion Best Kept War Memorial with Garden in 1999 and 2000. Finalists, and representing Scotland, in Britain in Bloom 1998, 2000, 2001. Winners of the Royal Horticultural Society Silver Award in 2002, a Gold Medal at Tatton Park Flower Show for designing and planting a floral bed, and a Tourism Award for outstanding efforts in promoting tourism in our area.

This year Drumnadrochit is entering the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom competition and representing Scotland again in the Britain in Bloom competition. There will be a lot of work. But it's worth it. So, if anyone wants to help in any way don't hesitate - phone Pat Veitch, the Flower Forum Co-ordinator, on 01456 450266.

History of the Flower Forum

A 'Flower Initiative' in Drumnadrochit was set up by the Glenurquhart Rural Community Association (GRCA) in 1992 and 1993. It focused mainly on the Village Green in Drumnadrochit. As interest developed in the flowers, more and more villagers wanted to get involved. The Drumnadrochit Flower Forum was established in 1994 and assumed responsibility for the initiative. Its main objectives have been to promote, develop new and support existing projects, to improve the environment in the Drumnadrochit/Glenurquhart area. The Flower Forum makes no profit. Every penny is used for projects to benefit the community. It was decided to keep an open door policy, with everyone is the community being encouraged to become involved in improving their own environment by means of labour, financial assistance or ideas on how they would like to see things progress without having to actually become members of the Flower Forum.

Thank you - everyone

At the end of each year we sit back and think. All this could not have happened without the help of our many volunteers, the assistance and support from the Highland Council and our local Councillor, and the financial donations received each year from local businesses, and fund-raising. It has brought together many groups, young and old, planting wild flowers, bulbs, flower beds, shrubs and trees - watering/feeding and litter-picking. So many to thank for so much.
