Glenurquhart Care Project (GCP)

This owns and runs The Glenurquhart Centre for the community. It has its own board of Director-Trustees and came into being as a Charity (SCO23535)and community business (Company 157417) in 1995. We encourage all interested community residents to consider company membership, perhaps for election to directorship.

The Glenurquhart Centre

This grew out of an idea to establish local care provision for the elderly and vulnerable in the communities in and around Glen Urquhart and Upper Strathglass. The Centre opened to its first clients on the 3rd April 2000. The building was extended in 2008 and now also serves all Strathglass , Kiltarlity and Abriachan.

The Glenurquhart Centre is located in Drumnadrochit and offers a range of services for older adults and is open weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm. It is Care-Commission registered to provide up to 30-day care places, 24 of which are Highland Council funded. It has a room for visiting services and three other rooms available for clients varied use.

Services available to individuals on request include access to Primary Healthcare including chiropody, physiotherapy, Social Care Services, Personal care including hairdressing, beauty treatments, and bathing (there is a bath with Hydrotherapy). Other services include a greenhouse, a minibus, a Centre car and laundry.

The Centre is a single storey building with complete wheelchair access to all areas. It has a large open plan lounge and dining area to encourage people to circulate and take an active part in the life of the Centre. Staff and volunteers encourage people to take part but no one is ever made to feel they must participate.

We hold weekly coffee mornings on a Tuesday and a coffee afternoon on a Thursday. This is to encourage the community to come along and take an active part in Centre life. For some these are a regular drop in session and encourage everyone to keep up to date with the local news.p>

We have visitors to the Centre who play music, talk about their lives or provide a slide show on an interest or hobby. We have a lively poetry/story group, 'Merry Mackars' and seated exercise classes - ‘Moovin aboot’ to keep staff, volunteers and client members active. We aim to offer a stimulating environment and encourage people to remain active physically and mentally.

Eligibility to attend is arranged in discussion with the Community Nurse, Doctor or Social Services. To get help and advice or to find out more then please get in touch with the Centre Manager - Etta Fieldsend.
